update: 10:51AM 10/20/2009
I finally got through to someone at APLE! I spent 3 hours trying to fax...(turns out fax machine is broken)... another two hours calling repeatedly (several times call dropped by host).... and I got to talk to a lady named Patricia McCall. She was extremely helpful and friendly, acknowledging of APLE's issues.

I got a whole bunch of paperwork sent to me, 4 megabytes of PDF in total. After 5 years, this will be the first time that I'm actually getting anywhere. I'm grateful, but I've learned to not hold my breath.

Keep trying - and soon, because from what I heard the funds will run out very soon again.

I was given the run around for four years straight. Received my preliminary in 2005 but I could not get ANYWHERE with them for years. I'd call call and call each time I went off track they would either not pick up, hang up on me, tell me there were no funds available, or tell me that I should be receiving something "soon".

It is now 2009 and for the first time in years I was able to speak to Linda Brown, who runs the APLE program. Her number is 1 888 224 7268, extension #3. Her fax number is 1 916 464 7977. She told me to fax my credential in this morning, but I have been trying nonstop for two hours and the fax number is CONSTANTLY busy. I called back and verified that this indeed is the number. I can't believe a fax machine would be receiving this much all the time... there must be a pile of paper where that machine feeds out to, and they must have a guy feeding it constantly.

In any case, here's my advice to you people who are still in school, or finishing their preliminary credential, or about to finish their first year. 1) don't count on APLE money. you might get it. you might not. 2) it is VERY important that you call and badger them constantly, don't give up, for weeks or months after you get your preliminary, because the clock starts ticking and once your 4th year passes they don't want to pay you anything anymore. For that reason, I don't think I'm going to receive much if at all. You cannot give up. Call during lunch, conference, whenever. Those numbers I've given you are good, keep trying. 3) Follow up, even if they tell you that you don't have to. Keep following up until they pay you.

It is really ridiculous, bordering on the edge of a scam, the way that the APLE program is being advertised. We go to school, make sacrifices in terms of career choice, then further sacrifices in terms of what schools we choose to work at, and then our supposed "incentive" turns out to be mainly dreams and fluff. I almost feel like I'm part of some huge pyramid scheme.

Boy, I thought I was alone. I received my first payment in May 2008 and they paid the correct amount since I am in Special Ed at a low performing school. I also received a payment just recently ( Aug 2009), but it seems like they just payed off one of the 4 little loans and this is not the entire amount that they owe me for one year. Is anybody else out there in the same boat? Has anybody ever received more than one payment in the same year (such as two smaller amounts which added up to the total owed to them for that year? Man, it is very frustrating to deal with these people. I have sent them several e mails and they never respond and I can never get a live person on the phone. Any helpful hints?

Leila, I am a second year teacher for children with special needs. I was wondering if you still have the lesson plan template? It will really help me. My principal want s me to teach Open Court to my children and it makes it hard to follow the pacing program.

I feel lost. I don't know what to teach from Open Court. Some tell me to just teach the green section and work on the Sounds and Letters and intervention section.

Can you HELP?

Thank You,

Claudia

When I went to OCR training for Special Education @ the end of the 2007-2008 school year, I was told by the people who run the special ed. unit that the most important stories are usually the first, second, and last stories. However, it all depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If you teach special ed., then you have the luxury of teaching half the stories. So, read the stories, or at least the synopsis at the beginning of the T.E., and decide which 3 or 4 would work for you. E-mail me if you have any questions.

Thank you for sharing Aneshia. I guess this problem is epidemic. I hope this book helps your niece. I'm sad to to say that even though I've constantly tried to instill in my daughter a love of her hair, she still wants that long Barbie doll hair. Another book that your niece might love is Nappy Hair by Carolivia Herron & I Love Myself by Karen Beaumont. The title characters are lovely shades of dark brown.

i just bought this book for my niece because she has beautiful thick woolly hair but she just notes that it is different from everyone else's. a lot of little girls have a desire for their hair to be like their barbie dolls or even their favourite tv star and i just loved that there is a book that she can see herself in. This is an issue that not only plagues African American children but it is a global issue. I am from Trinidad, a rainbow nation as it is coined, but the issue of identity and our need to be european plagues us here as well..

I know that feeling. I'm in college studying special education. I chose K-6 special ed and elementary ed as majors but the more schooling I get, the more I'm leaning toward middle school. I used to be afraid to teach middle school because that is such an important time in children's lives and I don't know if I'm going to know enough to support them in all the ways they need.

Good luck, I'll be happy to hear how your year goes!

[...] A Fire Engine for Ruthie, by Lesléa Newman, is a must read, especially for little girls. I’d have to say this book is especially good for tomboys. The little girl in the book, Ruthie, goes to visit her grandma who has many activities all planned out for them; girly activities, that is. As it turns out, Ruthie isn’t interested in any of that. What Ruthie’s interested in are things that boys are traditionally interested in- fire trucks, silver ladders, blue trains, and a little red caboose and wheels that go chucka-chucka, chucka-chucka and a whistle that goes toot! toot! Although Nana doesn’t understand, she lets Ruthie be who she is. This book is about being true to yourself. Great story! [...]

[...] Roxaboxen, by Alice McLerran, is one of my favorite books ever. It celebrates one of my favorite subjects of imagination. This is the true story of the author’s mother and aunt’s play world in Yuma, AZ during the Depression. Money and toys were scarce, so they used their imagination and created a little town they called Roxaboxen, complete with a sheriff and a jail. This is the cutest little story. Read it. Your class will love it. [...]

[...] Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst, is about the worst day ever. It’s just one of them days! Everyone has them. This book captures that terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day perfectly. It is such a cute little book. It all centers on Alexander who is having one of the worst days of his young life. It actually began the night before when he fell sleep with gum in his mouth; now there’s gum in his hair. He tripped on his skateboard and dropped his sweater in the sink while the water was running. From then, he could tell that it was going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. His best friend is no longer his best friend, and his mom even forgets to pack his dessert in his lunch. He thinks that he’s going to move to Australia! The day just keeps getting worse and worse as it spirals out of control. The book ends with his mom telling him that some days are just like that, even in Australia. [...]

[...] Mr. Peabody’s Apples, by Madonna, was quite impressive. This led me to wonder if she wrote it, herself, or if she had someone ghost write it for it. I loved this book. It deals with gossiping and its harmful effects. I read it to my students because of all the gossiping my students were doing. In the book, Mr. Peabody is the victim of vicious gossip. He teaches the perpetrator a lesson they’ll never forget. [...]

[...] Secret of the Peaceful Warrior, by Dan Millman, was a fantastic book. My students loved it. One of my students even asked if I could buy him one. He wanted to earn it. Why did they love it so much? Well, the book deals with bullying, friendship, and turning negatives into positives. The book begins as the title character, Danny, meets an older gentleman by the name of Socrates while he’s running from a bully. It’s kinda’ like a Karate kid book. Socrates teaches Danny about the peaceful warrior. A contradiction? I know. Read it and you’ll understand. [...]

[...] I Like Myself, by Karen Beaumont, is one of the cutest books ever. I love this book because it teaches self-esteem. When I first read the book, it reminded me of my little girl, Phillise. There’s this picture in the book where the little girl in the book gets her hair washed and it’s sticking straight up. Kinda’ scary looking. It so reminded me of Phillise’s hair when I wash it. Although I love that the little girl is brown, your audience doesn’t have to be. The message is loud & clear- love yourself no matter what you look like. [...]

My husband just started his 6th year of teaching. He is an APLE teacher (and has been since he started teaching). I have been managing the paperwork. What a hassle all around. He's received payments for his first 3 years of teaching, but we are STILL WAITING for the APLE payment for the 07-08 school year. First the Student Aid Commission (CSAC) claims they don't have the paperwork. So we re-sent it - TWICE. Then they had it for processing, but the department was backed up because of budget cuts and furloughs. FINALLY they issued payment, but the payment was a California Registered Warrant (aka an IOU from the State of California). Our lender is holding the warrant and will presumably redeem it come Sept. 4th, but in the mean time we are accruing interest on the higher loan balance until the lender gets the actual check (sometime around the 20th of September).

We put in the application for the Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program (for 5 years service at a low income school) and will hopefully hear about that by December of this year. Between the 5K for fed program and the last 3K that the State owes us, we should just about have the loans paid off.

We have been counting on these programs to pay off the lion's share of his student loan debt (16K of total 24K debt). The fact that these agencies take FOREVER to process their paperwork and issue payment is appalling. In the meantime, the borrowers are the ones holding the bag on the interest that is accruing on those larger balances.
